Information You Submit
Search Entries
A name, location, or other term entered in a search box is transmitted to the third-party provider that operates the search service. Virginia Released Inmates does not store or log those search terms on its own systems. The provider's privacy terms govern its receipt and handling of the query. Because a search may contain sensitive identifying information, visitors may instead go straight to the appropriate Virginia jail, VADOC, court, BOP, ICE, or notification system.
Messages Sent to Us
When someone sends an email or contact-form message, we retain the information needed to read the request, respond, and maintain the exchange. Messages are not shared outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law. A general message should not contain a person's criminal-history file, private identification documents, or other sensitive records.
Technical Data Collected Automatically
Ordinary web systems may create technical logs each time a page loads. These details help deliver the site, measure use, and diagnose faults. The recorded data may include:
- The internet protocol address used for the visit
- The browser name and version
- The device category and operating system
- Pages viewed and time spent on them
- The referring website, when one is supplied
- The date and time of each request
Cookies
Cookies and similar tools may be used to understand visits and remember technical preferences. A browser can reject or delete cookies. Blocking them may change how some site functions, partner tools, analytics, or advertising behave.
How Information Is Used
Information is used only for operating and understanding the service. Typical purposes include:
- Delivering pages reliably and maintaining site performance
- Passing a requested search to the selected partner service
- Learning which statewide and locality pages visitors find useful
- Finding errors, abuse, and technical problems
- Displaying advertising that may reflect a visitor's interests
Other Websites and Services
Links may lead to Virginia city or county jail rosters, regional-jail sites, sheriff pages, VADOC, the Virginia Parole Board, Virginia courts, VINELink, BOP, ICE, locality subdomains, and outside search tools. Once a visitor follows a link, the destination's own privacy notice and practices control. Virginia Released Inmates does not set those terms.
Advertising providers may use their own cookies or related technology to measure activity across websites and select ads. That processing takes place through the provider's systems, not through a search-term log maintained by Virginia Released Inmates.
Parties That May Receive Data
Virginia Released Inmates does not sell personal information. Limited data may reach service providers that perform a stated function or an authority entitled to receive it, including:
- Search partners that process a query submitted to their tool
- Analytics providers that measure site traffic and use
- Advertising networks that deliver and assess advertisements
- Law-enforcement agencies or public bodies acting under a valid legal order
Data Security
Reasonable administrative and technical safeguards are used to protect information under our control. No website, transmission method, or internet-connected storage system is fully secure. Virginia Released Inmates cannot promise that a breach, interception, loss, or unauthorized access will never occur.
Visitors Under Eighteen
This service is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under eighteen. A parent or guardian who believes a minor submitted information may use the Contact Us page to request review and deletion.
Your Privacy Choices
Subject to applicable law and the ability to verify a request, a visitor may ask for:
- A copy of personal information held by Virginia Released Inmates
- Correction of information that is inaccurate
- Deletion of information when the request lawfully applies
- An opt-out from certain forms of processing when available
These choices apply to information controlled by Virginia Released Inmates. A request concerning a partner, government portal, sheriff, jail, VADOC, or court must go to that separate custodian. Virginia's Freedom of Information Act, including ยง 2.2-3704, governs requests for qualifying public records from Virginia public bodies and does not turn this private site into a government records office.
Changes to This Notice
This Privacy Notice may be revised as the site, vendors, or legal duties change. A revised notice takes effect when it is posted here with a new effective date or other update marker.
